Service Minute: Check the Turntable Rotation Bearing Bolts

Good operating condition and extended life expectancy of mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) are largely influenced by regular care and maintenance. This goes beyond the daily care and feeding of the machine’s systems; it also includes longer-term attention such as annual maintenance procedures. Genie® MEWP specifications require that checking a boom’s turntable rotation bearing bolts procedure be performed annually.
Maintaining proper torque on the turntable bearing bolts is essential to safe machine operation. Improper bolt torque could result in an unsafe operating condition and component damage.
This maintenance procedure can be done in six simple steps:
Step 1:
On Genie S® booms, Z®-45 XC™ and Z-45/25 (J) IC, DC and Bi-Energy boom models: Raise the (primary) boom and place a safety chock on the lift cylinder rod. Carefully lower the boom until it is 1 in (2.5 cm) from the lift cylinder safety chock or support the boom assembly with a suitable lifting device.
On all other Genie Z booms: Raise the secondary boom and place a safety chock on the
lift cylinder rods. Carefully lower the boom until it is 1 in (2.5 cm) from the lift cylinder safety chock or support the boom assembly with a suitable lifting device.
To avoid crushing hazards, please keep hands away from the cylinder and all moving parts when lowering the boom. And, to avoid component damage, do not apply excessive force to the safety chock or damage may occur.
Please note: Access to the upper and lower turntable bearing bolts will vary depending on model.
Step 2:
Turn the key switch to the off position.
Step 3:
Using a star pattern, confirm that each turntable mounting bolt is torqued in sequence to specification. Please refer to the Maintenance Manuals for Genie booms for the exact torque to be applied on the turntable rotation bearing bolts by model.
Step 4:
Raise the boom and remove the safety chock or lifting device.
Step 5:
Lower the boom to the stowed position.
Step 6:
Using a star pattern, confirm that each lower bearing mounting bolt is torqued in sequence to specification. Please refer to the Maintenance Manuals for Genie booms for the exact torque to be applied on the turntable rotation bearing bolts by model.
Keeping up with scheduled maintenance tasks will affect the residual value and on-the-job performance of each and every MEWP in a rental fleet, as well as will influence the market’s perception of a rental business and its equipment. By completing annual maintenance procedures, including checking the turntable rotation bearing bolts, MEWPs will work harder and last longer.
