Nobody likes paying for machine transport. It can be expensive, particularly when you consider moving heavy equipment cross country or internationally. Terex AWP has taken a serious look at how we can save our customers money, and one area that has been hugely successful is fitting more Genie® or Terex® machines on a truck. We have two clear examples of this from recent product launches, which were redesigns of existing popular products.
The first is the Genie Z-62 articulating boom (previously the well-known Z-60) increased from a single unit per truck to two units on a standard truck. The second is the new Terex RL4 light tower. The previous RL4 light tower shipped 10 towers per 48-ft flatbed; now through thoughtful redesign, 17 units ship at a time.
With both the boom and light tower, machine performance specs were not compromised to achieve shipping efficiency — they were improved. For example, the Z-62 boom gained platform height and horizontal outreach without sacrificing the compact size and low unit weight. The RL4 light tower achieved longer runtime and added a convenient vertical mast, while reducing the envelope size. As engineers had these improved shipping goals in mind from the beginning of the project, they were able to carefully lay out the machine to achieve maximum performance while optimizing the footprint.
These changes have literally saved our customers money from day one: Customers save when the machines ship from the factory to the dealer, from the dealer to their customers and any time products are moved between dealer branches. Think about a jobsite that requires 10 60-ft booms. Would you rather send a truck and driver out 10 times or 5? Or that big mining site that needs 50 light towers — do you want to transport 5 truckloads or 3? With our customers’ dollars top-of-mind, these thoughtful changes enable truck drivers to get units to jobsites more efficiently and at less cost so they can start making you money faster.
